About Our Care Courses

Best Practice Training offers a wide range of full day, half day and bespoke training courses to meet the needs of care employers.  Our courses include training for managers, supervisors, assessors, experienced support staff and those new into care.

We specialise in practical training that gives learners valuable hands-on experience. Using specialist equipment we ensure that learners become competent and confident in practical skills; meaning they are trained to deliver safe, effective high quality care.

We will partner with you to understand your employee’s and organisational learning needs, supporting you the employer and your employees through all our learning interventions.  We will then provide you with bespoke learning evaluation reports.

Our Course Times

Our morning session runs from 9.30am until 12.30pm.
Our afternoon session runs from 1pm until 4pm.

The Care Certificate

We offer 3 options for The Care Certificate to work with differing needs and budgets. Please look at the options below and click on the find out more button for more information and booking options.

Course Overview:
The 6 Day knowledge based Care Certificate is a key component for all new Health Care Support Workers (HCSW) and Adult Social Care Workers (ASCW). Replacing Common Induction Standards training, this course applies across the health and social care sector and ensures knowledge competencies across the new 15 fundamental standards.

The 15 standards will be delivered across 6 days and will include, group work, discussion and practical application. Participants will produce a written portfolio of evidence, demonstrating their knowledge across each standard. On successful completion of the knowledge based portfolio, participants will be certificated for Care Certificate knowledge competencies.

Care Certificate

Effective Assessments Training

Duration:
1 day course

Course Overview:
The Care Certificate is mandatory for all new Health Care Support Workers (HCSW) and Adult Social Care Workers, replacing Common Induction Standards.   Observational assessments in the workplace are crucial to ensure employees meet the required competencies.

Staff Groups:
This course is designed specifically for managers, supervisors and senior staff who are responsible for observing and assessing in the workplace.  Participants will learn how to observe and assess against the Care Certificate standards.

Course Aims:

  • To provide participants with the knowledge, skills and values that underpin effective observational assessments.

Effective Supervision & Appraisal Training

Duration: 

1 day course

Staff Groups:
This course is designed specifically for managers and supervisors, who would like to review, develop and/or refine their skills.  It is also appropriate for managers who would welcome a boost to their confidence by re-affirming their skills.

Course Overview:
The course concentrates on management skills and techniques for creating an effective supervisory relationship and process.  Emphasis is placed on communication and interpersonal skills.  The content also covers how to develop a workforce that takes responsibility for their own learning and personal development.

Care with Dignity

Duration: 1/2 Day course

Staff Groups:

This course is aimed at all staff and volunteers working within the health and social care sector.

Course Overview:

This course explores how dignity plays an integral part of caring and supporting people. It describes how staff’s attitude and behaviours affect the people they support. It sets out the standards for delivery of care and how to ensure dignity and respect are maintained throughout the care giving process.

Person Centred Support

Duration: 1/2 Day course

This course is aimed at all staff and volunteers working within the health and social care sector and those who have a responsibility to support individuals with medication needs.

Course Overview:

This course will provide the knowledge and skills to ensure the care giving process is person centred.

Course Aims:

  • To explore and understand the six values recognised within health and social care
  • To understand our own values and how they shape the way we think and react
  • To recognise and understand individuality, choice, privacy and independence
  • To understand how to work in ways that promote person centred values
  • To understand the factors contributing to individuals’ wellbeing

Medication Awareness

Duration: 1/2 Day course

Staff Groups:

This course is aimed at all staff and volunteers working within the health and social care sector and those who have a responsibility to support individuals with medication needs.

Course Overview:

This course will equip you with the skills to support an individual with medication needs, to enable you to record accurately and the legislation involved with this.

Course Aims:

  • To assess which actions should be taken for safe hygiene

Basic Life Support

Duration: 

1/2 Day course

Staff Groups:
This course is aimed at all staff and volunteers working within the health and social care sector and other groups who require this knowledge.

Course Overview:
This course is essential for any person taking responsibility for another and includes basic first aid and CPR training. For full First Aid training, the Emergency First Aid at Work or the First Aid at Work course would be the most beneficial.

Course Aims: 

  • To provide an introduction to first aid training
  • To equip individuals with the skills required to deal with an emergency situation effectively
  • To obtain the ability to deliver CPR confidently

Emergency First Aid at Work (Level 2)

Duration: 1 Day course

Staff Groups:
This course is aimed at all staff and volunteers working within the health and social care sector and those who have a responsibility to provide First Aid in their work place. Participant must be physically able to provide First Aid.

Course Overview:
This course will equip you with the skills to provide Emergency First Aid treatment to an individual. This course will fulfil the HSE requirements of companies under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. This course is Approved by QualSafe Awards, and Awarding Organisation recognised by Ofqual to offer regulated qualifications.

First Aid at Work (Level 3)

Duration: 3 Day course

Staff Groups:
This course is aimed at all staff and volunteers working within the health and social care sector and those who have a responsibility to provide First Aid in their work place. Participant must be physically able to provide First Aid.

Course Overview: This course will equip you with the skills to provide First Aid treatment to an individual and successfully complete the paperwork for accident and sudden illness. This course will fulfil the HSE requirements of companies under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. This course is Approved by QualSafe Awards, and Awarding Organisation recognised by Ofqual to offer regulated qualifications.

Safer People Handling

Duration: 1/2 Day course

Staff Groups:

This course is aimed at all staff and volunteers working within the health and social care sector or people who have responsibility for safer people handling.

Course Overview:

This course covers all issues relating to safer moving and positioning of people as well as manual handling of objects and is designed to meet requirements and recommendations of HSE Manual Handling Regulations 1992. This course is designed to limit the risk of injury for those providing physical care to people, it will identify best practice and the most appropriate technique to be used when moving and handling people.

Safe Guarding Adults at Risk

Duration: 1/2 Day course

Staff Groups:

This course is aimed at all staff and volunteers working within the health and social care sector and those who have a responsibility to ensure the safety of individuals within the work place.

Course Overview:

This course will explore the potential causes and indicators of abuse and the duty of employees to disclose allegations. This will include how to address any immediate safety or protection needs of an individual at risk.

Introduction to Mental Health

Duration: 1/2 Day course

This course will equip you with the knowledge to support those with epilepsy. It will provide information on the treatment of an individual during a seizure and the medications required.

Mental Capacity Act 2005/DOLs

Duration: 1/2 Day course

Course Overview:

This course will cover the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and its implications. It will provide an overview of the existing legal framework for protecting adults at risk.

This course is aimed at all staff and volunteers working within the health and social care sector and those who have a responsibility to create, maintain and secure written documentation.

Course Overview:

This course will explore the issues around confidentiality within the work place and equip individuals with the knowledge and skills to effectively create, maintain and secure written documents.

Course Aims:

  • To discuss the issues of confidentiality within the work place
  • To discuss the Data Protection Act and its relevance to the work place
  • To explore best practice in respect of report writing
  • To offer practical advice and examples of how to create effective person centred documentation
  • To explore language used within documents, discussing the importance of being clear and specific, removing ambiguity

Food Safety Awareness

This course will equip you with the knowledge and understanding to both prepare, store and serve all meals safely.

Course Aims:

  • To understand how food poisoning occurs
  • To understand how to prevent food poisoning
  • To be aware of what causes contamination of food and equipment

Positive Behaviour Support

Duration: 1 day

Staff Groups: This course is aimed at all staff and volunteers working in health and social care and anyone that requires Positive Behaviour Support.

Course Overview: An introductory course into the Principles of Positive Behaviour Support (PBSP). This course is for learners who wish to understand the basic principles that underpin PBS and how it works. It provides a basic introduction and covers the core components required when applying the PBS approach. On completion of this course learners will have a basic understanding of the knowledge that everyone should have when using Positive Behaviour Support.

Course Aims:

  • Explain what is meant by the term ‘challenging behaviour’
  • Describe a number of factors that influence the behaviour of others
  • Identify values and attitudes that promote the philosophy of PBS
  • Identify the elements that make up a Positive Behaviour Support Plan
  • Identify the elements that make up the ‘Low Arousal Approach’
  • Describe the difference between proactive and reactive strategies
  • Identify sources of good practice that promotes PBS
  • Describe at least 2 ways in which we can safely respond to difficult situations – for example, using non-physical strategies & de-escalation skills

 Fundamental Care Refresher

 Paediatric First Aid Awareness – 2 hour course

Duration:
2 hour course

Course Overview:
Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, or just interested in extending your knowledge, this course will teach you how to deal with choking, how to perform CPR, recognising the symptoms of meningitis, and lots more. The course is fun, engaging, and very informative. Babies and children are more than welcome to come along, we have lots of toys on site to keep them entertained whilst you learn, and they’ll be encouraged to join in themselves!

 Paediatric First Aid Level 3

Duration:

Course Overview:
This course refreshes all issues relating to the moving and positioning of people. This course is for people that have already completed the full Safer People Handling course. It will explore best practice and the most appropriate techniques to be used when moving and handling people.

Refresh knowledge around Health and Safety rules and regulations
Refresh on safer moving and handling practices
To ensure participants have recapped knowledge and feel confident working safely in their workplace.

 Recognising Grooming

Duration:
Half or full day course available

Staff Groups:
This course is designed specifically for senior managers, managers, supervisors and anyone who may have contact with children, young people and/or adults who may be, or have suffered, grooming. The course will update your safeguarding knowledge and expertise in understanding the grooming process and recognising the signs. The course is also appropriate for designated safeguarding officers, nursery managers, social workers, local authorities, care managers, teachers, governors and head teachers.

Course Overview:
The course covers how to recognise the signs of the grooming of children and/or young vulnerable individuals. How, why and where individuals are targeted and how and why they succumb to the perpetrators. The course also addresses communication and interpersonal skills and develops confidence in staff in order to create positive conversation and dialogue within the workplace.

Course Aims: 
To provide participants with knowledge and understanding in order to complement the organisations current safeguarding, health & safety and risk assessment policies and assist with self-evaluation and inspection.

 Recognising Human Trafficking  

Duration:
Half or full day course available

Staff Groups:
This course is designed specifically for senior managers, managers, supervisors and anyone who may have contact with children and/or young people who need to update their safeguarding knowledge with an understanding of human trafficking and recognise the signs. The course is also appropriate for designated safeguarding officers, nursery managers, social workers, local authorities, care managers, teachers, governors and head teachers.

Course Overview:
The course covers how to recognise the signs of children and/or young vulnerable individuals who may be being exploited. How, why and where individuals are targeted and how and why they succumb to the perpetrators. The course also addresses the behaviours and trauma linked to sexual exploitation. The course aims to develop confidence in staff to recognise the behaviour, language and signs of someone who may be suffering exploitation.

Course Aims: 
To provide participants with knowledge and understanding in order to complement the organisations current safeguarding, health & safety and risk assessment policies and assist with self-evaluation and inspection.

 Recognising Child Sexual Exploitation

 Recognising Coercive Control

Duration:
Half or full day course available

Staff Groups:
This course is designed specifically for senior managers, managers, supervisors and anyone who may have contact with children, young people and/or adults who need to update their safeguarding knowledge with an understanding of coercive control and the law. The course addresses the complicated psychology behind the emotional abuse and trauma of coercion and control in both personal and professional relationships. The course is also appropriate for designated safeguarding officers, nursery managers, social workers, local authorities, care managers, teachers, governors and head teachers.

Course Overview:
The course covers how to recognise the signs of coercive control of children, young people and/or adults and the current law. The course discusses the psychological damage to the victim of such relationships and how this affects the brain. The course also addresses the difficulties in ending coercive and controlling relationships and also the effects on young people witnessing such behaviours.

Course Aims: 
To provide participants with knowledge and understanding of the psychological damage of coercive and controlling relationships and post traumatic relationship syndrome (PTRS) adding an in-depth dimension to the organisations policies and procedures, self-evaluation, supervision and inspection.
